PRESS RELEASE

SAMUEL R. BERGER LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY FIRM
Stonebridge International to help business leaders solve problems and seize opportunities worldwide

WASHINGTON, D.C., Friday, May 11, 2001 - Today former National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger announced the formation of Stonebridge International LLC. He will serve as chairman. Former United States Ambassador to Brazil Anthony S. Harrington will be its president. Stonebridge International, a Washington-based global strategy firm, brings unparalleled experience, current knowledge of foreign governments, and regional and industry expertise to help business leaders solve problems and seize opportunities worldwide.

"Given the increasingly competitive global marketplace, successful companies require a sophisticated and up-to-date understanding of trends and events, their likely impact and the choices they face," said Berger. "We provide that essential perspective and the ability to help shape and execute results-oriented strategies."

The Stonebridge International staff and high-level advisors include business leaders, scholars and former government officials who have served five administrations, both Republican and Democratic. They have experience solving complex international problems ranging from market access to finding appropriate business partners. The Board of Advisors is led by Clayton Yeutter (former U.S. Trade Representative, 1985-1988; and Secretary of Agriculture, 1989-1991) and includes Roger C. Altman (former Deputy Secretary of Treasury, 1993-1995), Thomas J. Donohue (President & CEO, US Chamber of Commerce), Susan Eisenhower (Chair of the Center for Political and Strategic Studies and President of the Eisenhower Institute), H.P. Goldfield (former Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development, 1984-1987; and Associate Counsel to the President, 1982-1983), Kenneth Lieberthal (Professor of Business Administration and Political Science at the University of Michigan; and former NSC Senior Director for Asia, 1998-2000), Eli J. Segal (former President and CEO of the Welfare-to-Work Partnership and the Corporation for National Service), and L. William Seidman (CNBC Chief Commentator; former Economic Affairs Advisor to President Ford, 1974-1977; and Chairman of the FDIC, 1985-1989, and RTC, 1989-1991).

Stonebridge staff and regional consultants have up-to-date, high-quality knowledge and relationships in Asia (particularly China, Japan and Korea), Europe and Russia, Latin America, South Asia (particularly India) and the Middle East.

Stonebridge International will serve a discrete number of companies in the telecommunications, energy, aviation, financial services, entertainment, manufacturing and other industries. The firm will work closely with Lehman Brothers in advising on business transactions in key markets and with Hogan & Hartson in executing strategies that depend on experienced legal advice in business, financial and governmental arenas around the world.

Berger, who during his tenure at the White House worked closely with foreign leaders throughout the world, is known for his strategic judgment and abundant energy and tenacity. "Colleagues praise him for sound judgment, discretion, the ability to absorb technical minutiae fast without losing sight of the big picture," wrote Time Magazine's J.F.O. McCallister.

As Ambassador to Brazil, Stonebridge President Tony Harrington served in the fifth largest country, representing about half of South America in population, territory and economy and the focus of more U.S. investment than any emerging country. He carried out a mandate to upgrade the level of U.S.-Brazil relations in a period of extraordinary engagement. He concluded key treaties and agreements and worked closely with both the U.S. and Brazilian business communities. Harrington brings in-depth knowledge of corporate ventures and finance, trade issues and the telecommunications industry.

Specifically, Stonebridge International will help companies solve market access problems, provide risk assessment and analysis of business opportunities abroad, break government log-jams, develop and help execute growth strategies, build new business relationships around the world, and increase the international profile of companies and their management.
